Sabbatical Over

March 17, 2013

Hi all… The last time I blogged was after the 1-1 away draw against Southampton and I finished that blog with

“You know what, being ill while writing this, like the players last night I have no desire to continue”

Well with her indoors wanting a lot of redecorating done, I decided to take some time out, get on with her wishes and when I had some time, start blogging again. Well after two months, I’ve finished the big SOS DIY and have some time on my hands, so I’m back with some thoughts on AFC…

What’s happened in my absence? Well the fans still seem split three ways, Arsene out, Arsene knows and those sitting on the fence getting splinters in their arse, of which I’m one.

January

The FACup like last season took pride of place in our results drawing away at Swansea 2-2 and a late Jack goal at the beating them in the replay at the Emirates. Brighton away in the 4th round was won 3-2 with a scrappy winning goal from Theo Walcott. The league games produced defeats against City 0-2 and Chelsea 1-2. A draw against Liverpool 2-2. Our only league win came due an early 10 min second half spell v West Ham where we score four goals and ran out 5-1 victors.

Dennis Bergkamp is to become statue number four outside the stadium and may I say well deserved. For those of you who have been into Diamond Club, you will know that there are two busts in their, one of Arsene and the other DB10.

February

Started with league wins against Stoke and Sunderland, both 1-0 wins and two clean sheets. Finishing the month with another league win at home to Villa, making it three league wins out of three for the month. However, a poor choice of first team against Blackburn due to impending home Champions League match against Bayern, saw us lose 1-0 and slide out of the FACup to a team that had one shot of note. In the end Bayern turned up at the Emirates a few days later and with German “Vorsprung durch Technik” took us apart and won the game at a canter 1-3..

March

The North London Derby… Sadly that mob down the road took the spoils 2-1, though I thought we deserved at least a draw. seven points is the GAP now in GBFC favour with ten games left. Can we do it? Maybe that’s down to GBFC and their inability to seize the moment and throw it away as they always seem to. Right now though it’s said GBFC have shifted the power to their of North London. You could side with the English media on this, or you could be like me and can’t stop laughing at the suggestion.

Fair enough GBFC are above us, playing good football, getting results and their main man is can’t stop scoring. However, what have they won? Has the season finished? best keep the old North & South shut until the Fat Lady starts singing

Apparently the rumour mill went into over-drive just prior to the match with GBFC when it was said a bid from a Arab Consortium (Qatar) of £1.5 billion, no less, was to be made to take over Arsenal. This would settle stadium debts, hand over money for new players and kop this………. Reduce ticket prices…. Christmas has come early, well if you believe that sort of thing.

So next week we play Bayern away. Now having supported Arsenal for 50 years I have to say, AFC winning in Munchen is a tuff call. My heart will always hope that this being football, anything can happen, but right now, my head is telling me, that’s your lot mate for this season. We lost 1-3 away to Anderlecth in 1970 and won home leg 3-o, but this is the other way round and Bayern don’t concede goals.

So where does that leave AFC for the season. 10 league game. 10 cup finals.

  • Swansea (a)
  • Reading (h)
    • WBA (a)
    • Norwich (h)
    • Everton (h)
    • Fulham (a)
    • United (h)
    • QPR (a)
    • Wigan (h)
    • Newcastle (a)

This is going to be the toughest test yet for Arsenal to grab that trophy engraved with 4th place on it. Hopefully Arsenal can do enough and both Chelsea and Spurs can mess their programme up a little. Yes!!! We are left praying our enemies do us a favour. Everton have to play all three London teams and Liverpool have to play both Spurs & Chelsea, so with that in mind, I’ll say both the scouse side will miss out. One of Arsenal, Chelsea or Spurs is going to miss out and finish fifth.

There can be no doubt a shake up/clear out is needed this summer and I suppose the Champions League in or out will play a huge part in that.
