A few thoughts on the West Ham 1-3 Arsenal league match

October 7, 2012

Hi Gooners. Since I have been doing this blog I have covered 32 match reports and only had five defeats to write about.

Ray Winstone… Russell Brand… Ross Kemp… David Essex – Hold me close, don’t let me go…  (remember him) you’re team were taught a lesson… Schweeeeet!!! There is nothing like a trip down to E.20 to grab three points. Twenty-four games now on the run and only two defeats for Arsenal at Upton Park. We should play both our games at Upton Park each season.

Of Arsenal’s first thirteen away matches only Everton is  not being screened live on TV.  So there I was sat ready for Arsenal to take three points from the match. I had us down for a 2-0 win.

The team was Mannone, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs (Andre Santos 56), Ramsey,  Cazorla, Arteta, Gervinho (Walcott 61), Giroud, Podolski (Koscielny 85). The BFG is back in the starting line up after a virus. Giroud is brought in to start in place of Oxo and it looks a strong line up.

The teams entered the pitch followed by Fat Sam and Wenger who almost looked like best buddies.  We’re forever blowing bubbles, pretty bubb…………………………. Also West Ham has a bubble making machine at the side of pitch… Gimmick… Nice touch a round of applause for one of football’s true gents John Bond.

Early pressure from Arsenal as first a Podolski shot, then Giroud with a low drive from the edge of the area which Jaaskelainen just managed to tip it past the post for a corner. The corner is cleared. Sometimes I wonder why Arsenal bother having corners as nothing really happens from them. Arsenal are totally bossing the early stage and the Arsenal fans can clearly be heard.

West Ham’s tactics were simply lump it up for Carroll to cause problems. After 10 mins Arsenal had 75% of the possession. Jenkinson wins a corner off Collins and from the corner Collin’s clears for another corner. This time the ball is crossed and fell into the area, where after a scramble it fell to Giroud, who shaped up, shot and there was Carroll deflecting what I though was a goal bound shot for another corner. Then from that corner there is Carroll again to clear, he’s a better defender than forward.

Arsenal with all that pressure fall behind. Diame gets the ball goes in between Jenkinson and Ramsey, leaves Rambo for dead and with still some work to do, shapes up nicely and curls a beauty into the far corner of the net. This goal for me goes down to sheer forward brilliance, superb effort though well against the run of play. Twitter meltdown as defence and Ramsey take the blame. Ok we’re were 1-0 down, however, from what I saw of the match at that stage it was never going to end in a win for West Ham, no matter how ESPN tried to dress it up. They really do seem to love it when Arsenal are losing on their channel. Diame is booked for celebrating the goal. Football really can shoot itself in the foot at times, punishment for celebrating, it’s just crazy and the FA should stop this.

Now I’m puzzled. Having stupidly booked Diame for celebrating the goal, Dowd now refuses to book Diame for a terrible tackle on Arteta that is a yellow card every day of the week. Dowd really is a poor excuse for a referee who seems to make it up as he goes along. Reminds me how he brought Newcastle back into a game they were losing 4-0 a couple of years back. Shocking referee…

Wets Ham get a corner and from it Carroll has a free header which thankfully goes straight into Mannone’s hands. This is followed by Carroll just flinging himself at the ball and ready to take out whoever gets in the way and on this occasion it was Mannone. Yellow all day long for me. Not for Dowd though. Giibs-The BGF- and there is Giroud and inch away from connecting and surely his first league goal for Arsenal.

Now Dowd decides to book Reid for simply running into Cazorla which is on a booking scale of one-to-ten only gets a three to Diame’s nine against Arteta.  Arsenal for the first time looking a bit dis-jointed and struggling to find their rhythm.

Gooooooooooooooal!!! What am I talking about? Arteta won the ball in the centre of the park and it fell to Giroud. Giroud then sprayed a nice ball out to the left where Podolski controlled the ball, looked up and pinged in a superb, mid-height ball into the area begging to be attacked and there was Giroud to poke out his left foot and BANG!! into the centre of the net for his first goal and get’s that Gareth Bale off his back…

La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, Giroud…

Just before half-time Gervinho brings down Noble and is booked for his troubles. Not sure that was in any way as bad as Diames on Arteta. I wish players would stop making these crazy fouls and giving away free kicks to teams like West Ham who thrive on then pumping the ball into the box and causing pressure in the hope they can grab a goal. Noble sends the free-kick into the area and Carroll wins another header and the ball falls kindly for Nolan who just cannot get his foot around the ball and screws his shot wide of the far post. So close… All down to giving away a silly free-kick.

HT 1-1 and for the best part of that half Arsenal were totally dominant. However, West Ham had their chances.

Not sure what was said at half time but the same Arsenal that played in the first half did n ot appear for the start of the second. Did the players go in thinking that the game was as good as won? The first 15 mins were shocking as Arsenal could not string a couple of passes together, in fact we were passing to the West Ham players more than they were, putting us under all sorts of pressure. Gibbs left the pitch injured and was replaced by Santos. Gibbs last contribution was a wild, wayward cross that went straight out for a throw in, however, he did play well again. Gibbs now has two weeks to get fit for Norwich away, I know he would like too, but I’m really not bothered he plays for England right now.

Irony alert!!! Vaz Te chases after a loose ball and Manonne looks to be favourite to get the ball and dives at Vaz Te’s feet. Vaz Te just makes sure his foot whacks Mannone on the head, deliberate in my view and Vaz Te goes down, falls on his shoulder and dislocates it. Vaz Te is taken off and could be out for some time.

Gervinho who has been quite frankly awful this match is replaced by Theo. Mad scramble in the area as Podolski scuff’s his shot, hits Cazorla, then Theo back heels the ball and Giroud just can’t finish it off, but it was a tight angle.. A typical Fat Sam move see’s the ball hoofed into the area where Carroll easily wins the ball before Mannone but thankfully cannot steer his header on target.  Lucky escape there. Then Arsenal contrive to give the ball away and also give Nolan all the time and space he needed and he is through on goal, is this 2-1 to the Hammers? No! Nolan messes it right up, and doesn’t even get his shot away. Sloopy Arsenal and they needed to get their grip back on this match.

Ramsey has the ball on the left and runs towards the area, turns and tries to past Taylor but has his ankle caught PENALTY!!! Dowd is unmoved, no surprise there. TV replays not that clear, it could have been a fraction outside the area, but whatever way, it was at the least a free-kick.

Gooooooooooooooal!!! Couple of more pointless corners for Arsenal, wasted and West Ham break with Diame who is stopped in his tracks and the ball comes to Giroud, who puts a lovely through ball to Theo who is through on goal, the sort of pass that is made for the Walcott’s of football, controls the ball, steadies himself and just places the ball past Jaaskelainen for 2-1 to the Arsenal!!! As in the first half Theo gets booked for celebrating, which to be fair to Dowd at least here he is consistent, but a stupid rule.

Nolan is fed by Jarvis and with the goal at his mercy he puts the ball over the bar, another lucky escape. Commentator said he normally scores those, does he? I think not. WOW the balls falls to the BFG in the area and the man with has the turning circle of a Super Tanker turns in a flash and shoots for goal, yet his shot is deflected for a corner.

Gooooooooooooooal!!! Theo beats one and loses control of the ball, however, at least he fights to get it back and gets a toe in for the ball to run to Cazorla who controls it, lines up a shot and hits a worldy into the corner of the net. Don’t bother moving keeper. What a goal!!! What a player!!! what a signing!!! 3-1 to the Arsenal and a more reflective scoreline.

Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!! Ole!!

That was bloody amazing!!! How did he see that pass was on? Yes ladies and gentlemen, I give you Santi Cazorla who slide rules a reverse pass through to Giroud to bag his second league goal, but he shoots straight at Jaaskelainen. What a wonderful footballer Santi is. A joy to watch.

That’s it, ref blows the final whistle and three points in the bag going into the international break.

Full-time 3-1 to Arsenal.

It’s a funny old game. Arsenal pay £11m for Podolski. £14m for Cazorla and £13 for Giroud and West Ham Paid £12m for Jarvis. Great result. Good to come back from behind and grab standard three points from Upton Park and nice to get a result with the International break upon us. Lose and it’s two weeks of doom and gloom. Good team performance save that 15/20 mins after the break. I’m sure as the season goes on, this will be ironed out. Didn’t the negative comments on Twitter about Rambo. Thought he had a very good game and getting stronger by the game.  The BFG certainly does make a difference with his calmness in defence. Jenkinson is growing every game and his confidence is definitely there  to see. Might be a struggle for Sagna to get straight back in. Midfield is looking very good and I thought Podolski and Giroud worked well together.
