Arsenal Euro Player watch 16 June 2012

June 16, 2012

Morning Gooners.

Ivan Gazidis has been discussing about how he feels it is Arsenal’s time to challenge for the title and Champions League and that exciting news on the transfer awaits all us Gooners. I still reckon a good clear out is on the cards and at least four more new players will arrive. Hopefully the start of the season will bring back Jack and Abu into the side as well and that both of them stay free from injury for a good period of time.

Robin van Persie won the PFA Fans player of the year to add to his other awards he has won for last seasons superb form from him.

I see the Premier League has a new TV deal in place from the end of next season. £3b for three seasons with Sky TV/BT Vision. (gets rid of ESPN and their amateur attempt at screening football. Good riddance to bad rubbish) That’s £1.25b more than the last deal and I reckon over three years that will give Arsenal an extra £100m in the coffers… Nice work if you can get it.

Euro’s Day seven…

Italy took on Croatia… With Italy drawing their opener and Croatia winning theirs, Italy could have done with a win here. The Italians took the game to Croatia and went into the lead through Pirlo’s superb first-half free-kick. Mandzukic’s equalised for Croatia to get a vital draw and leave Group C wide open. Ex-Arsenal player Eduardo only got on this time for about 10 mins and could not do anything to help the Croatians get the winner.

Ireland took on Spain… The Irish backed by about 30k fans inside the stadium were dealt blow as early as the third min when Torres strode onto a loose ball, passed the Irish defender and hit a rocket into the net for 1-0. The rest of the match Ireland were just chasing shadows as the Spanish produced a master class in pass and move. Both teams went in at half time with the score somehow still 1-0 to Spain. However four mins into the second half Spain doubled their lead through Silva who with coolness personified in the area placed the ball out of reach of Given into the net for 2-0.

Spain were dazzling the Irish and a more one-sided match you will not see… Pass-pass-pass-pass…………. Bang!!! Goooooooal!!!  Torres is away and 3-o with a clinical finish that Given could do nothing about. Torres made way for Cesc, who on 83 mins slammed a rocket into the net past Given for 4-0 and gave the score line a more realistic feel to it.  This was what the term “men against boys” was invented to describe. God knows what Spain would do if David Villa was fit?

The Irish fans were singing away and enjoying the their moment and good luck to them.

Euro day eight…

France took on Ukraine… Both ex-gooners Nasri and Clichy (It’s all about the money, money, money – Ka-Ching Ka-Ching. Ba-Bling Ba-Bling) play in this one… Well would you look at that! Thunder, lightning and torrential rain, never seen that before.

Game starts. Four mins into the match the weather brings the game to a halt as the ref brings the teams off. The teams come back at 6pm and start play with a drop ball. To be honest it did me a favour as it delayed it long enough for me to get home from work and watch, though what I saw in the first half made me wonder why I bothered leaving earlier than normal. Within eight mins of the second half starting Ribery-Menez-Goooooooal!!!!…. The match was only another three mins old when Benzema-Cabaye- Gooooooooal!!!!… 2-0 to the French and this game is over-dead-burried… Great pass and move by France on 63 mins sees Cabaye’s shot hit the post, so close to 3-0.. Ooooooooooo!!!! You could hear coming from the Bigg Market in Newcastle… Then with 15 mins to go Giroud comes on for a look at what could be Arsenal’s next signing… Not really enough time to see what he can do, though he did hit one high-wide-handsome… Full time France win 2-0 and take charge of the group.

England took on Sweeeeeeden. The game was delayed by 15 mins due to the weather situation in Donetsk and TV timings. Sweden took over the stadium in Kiev with their army of Yellow, along with a huge ABBA tribute band.  The first 23 mins saw poor football from both sides. Too many balls given away cheaply and very little skill on the pitch…

Bang!!! Gerrard crosses and there is Carroll with a superb Centre forward header into the net, Gooooooooooal!!! 1-0 England – they all count…. Two goals in the tournament so far for England both from Gerrard crosses and two headers… Well that was not a half for the purists with two poor teams, however, it’s 1-0 England…

Four mins into second half and a Swedish free kick taken by Ibramhimovic. His first shot comes back to him and he then he volleys the ball back at goal only for the ball to fall to Thor who puts the ball past a despairing Johnson to make it 1-1… 10 mins later and a Swedish cross is headed in by Thor again to give the Swedes a 2-1 lead. They have turned it around against England like so many times before.

Hodgson decides to take off the ineffective Milner and brings on Theo. Gooooooooooal!!!! Within four minutes the ball falls to Theo 20 yards out and he hits a wicked curling shot that flies past Isaksson in the Swedish goal. Had Rooney scored that, it would not have been classed as lucky. The bend on the ball beat the keeper all ends up.

Then Ibramhimovic heads the ball at goal and for all the world – that’s 3-2 Sweden, yet Hart pulls off a brilliant save. Goooooooooal!!! Theo again runs at the Swedish defence, past two – crosses and there is Welbeck who somehow manages to turn the cross in with a back flick, great improvisation by the lad 3-2 England. Then with a couple of minutes left Theo again crossed and there was Oxo perfectly shaped and ready to make it 4-2 and his first goal for his country, only there was “itsallaboutstevieme” to take it off Oxo’s toe and shoot with his left and straight at the keeper. So annoying!!!

Congratulations to Roy Hodgson. I was not one of his fans but nice to see him looking happy enough and at least he can sing the national anthem. The only person not seen singing ot so far is Wayne Rooney as Roy and the others players belt it out.

So there we have it, not the best performance you’ll see from England, not the greatest of England teams, not the greatest rapper that you ever new, yet they won and right now that counts. Surely we can beat Ukraine and if we do, the Country can get a lift.

Come on England!!!
