End of Season Report Wojciech Szczęsny
Wojciech Szczęsny
Wojciech Szczesny
- Born April 18, 199o Warsaw, Poland
- Position Goalkeeper
- Squad Number 13 (hopefully No.1 next season)
- Previous Club(s) Brentford (loan) Legia Warsaw
- Joined Arsenal August 01, 2007
Currently Arsenal’s No.1… Wojciech Szczęsny has made 48 appearances this season completing all
- 38 matches in the Premier League,
- 9 Europe,
- 1 FA Cup.
Szczęsny started in every one of Arsenal’s five fixtures during August, keeping clean sheets against both Newcastle and Udinese. Over the season Szczęsny had made many cracking saves to keep us in games…The wonderful penalty save v Udinese when the score was at 1-1 and we went on to beat them 2-1 with a RVP goal and qualify for the Champions League proper. The double Penalty save v Liverpool at Anfield that proved so crucial and which we won again 2-1 late on again from an RVP goal.
I feel this early form from Szczęsny made up Wenger’s mind to make Szczęsny No.1. Szczęsny has kept 14 clean sheets throughout the 2011-12 premiership season and is joint 4th in the list. Szczęsny has now played 73 times for Arsenal and kept 29 clean sheets. Stats also show that as for saves per match the Bottom 4 are Kenny QPR 64%, Szczesny Arsenal 63%, Jaaskelainen Bolton 63%, Robinson Blackburn 57%. Szczęsny does get beaten by a lot of shots, such as the two v WBA. Also he was beaten by three OG’s from K6 and two he could do nothing about v Spuds & Norwich at home, so he does have some bad luck as well.
Szczęsny has that bit of madness that a goalkeeper needs to be a top class keeper. Sadly for Szczęsny he will always be the goalie that let in eight goals v United at Old Trafford on the 28 August 2012 (My 54 Birthday), yet at times during the season has performed heroics making some superb saves, yet his distribution in both throwing and kicking needs to improve. Szczęsny picked up an end of the season back injury he got in the Chelsea home match and this may have given rise to his end of the season dip in form. I do feel fans have taken to Szczęsny in a big way.
Szczesny a big fans favourite, will be a big star and Arsenal’s No.1 goalkeeper for many years to come. Fans must remember the lad is only 22 years old which is nothing for a goalkeeper and he will make a few mistakes in his learning process. After a bout of not to clever tweets earlier this season Szczęsny sadly withdrew from Twitter. His final tweet :
“It’s just about time for me to grow up, delete twitter and focus on football! Thanks for all the support I have received here”
Shame I used to like his tweets. Good article from the Guardian on 22 Jan 2012 Wojciech Szczesny brings Arsenal much-needed assurance at the back Trivia
- He used to be roommates with Lukasz Fabianski when both played for Legia Warsaw
- His father is a former Polish international keeper
- He received a standing ovation at the end of his last game for loan club Brentford in the 2009/10 season
- He would choose Jim Carrey to play him in a film of him. Somebody Stop me………..
