A few thoughts on the Arsenal 3-3 Norwich league match

May 6, 2012

Afternoon Gooners… Well me and the Son armed with a full English brekkie inside, took the train from Harlow to Tottenham Hale, picked up the Tube to Holloway Road and entered the Emirates at 11.50am and took our seats to wait for kick off.

Today was a must win and home to Norwich three points should be in the bag. Robin Van Persie came out before the match to collect the two player-of-the-season awards he had won and today we needed some more of the goals that won him both of those awards.

The team… Szczesny, Sagna (Coquelin 33), Koscielny, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Ramsey (Oxlade-Chamberlain 63), Song, Gervinho, Rosicky, Benayoun (Chamakh 69), van Persie.

The ref blows the whistle, we’re off and before most fo the fans arriving late could get comfortable Gooooooooooooooal!!!! Arsenal 1-0 Norwich. Rosicky passes to Benayoun, on the left who holds the ball up. Gibbs makes a dart on the outside and takes the Norwich defenders eye of Benayoun, who does a little faint, comes inside and hits a pearler into the far corner of the net… Get in there!!! What a start…

Norwich on the attack now and Jackson crosses the ball that takes out three Arsenal defenders and  Grant Holt’s shot is blocked by Gibbs. Make no mistake Norwich are not holding back and Arsenal seem to be happy with 1-0 and playing like it’s job done. Another Norwich cross, which took a deflection off Ramsey and rose high into the air and into the area and Holt beats S13 to the ball with a  header but it goes over the bar. ”

Nooooo000o!!! However it was coming Arsenal 1-1 Norwich.  A good move down the right by Norwich and Noughton pulls the back and  Hoolahan with his left instep sidefoots the ball straight at Szczesny, who fails to keep the ball, S13 can’t be happy about that.

Arsenal come forward and the ball runs kindly for RVP  whose first-time shot goes way over the bar.  Holt gets in a shot and saved by S13. Norwich are looking the most likely and Arsenal don’t look like a team going for third and cementing Champions League football. Ramsey is booked for poor challenge, on Howson.

Noooooooo!!!! No surprise here and it’s Arsenal 1-2 Norwich 2. Another good break out of their half by Norwich and the ball is with Holt who shoots from the edge of the area, hits Gibbs foot and loops over S13 into the back of the net! Touch of Spuds first against us back in Feb. Arsenal come forward and a  low cross from Sagna and RVP just cannot get to the ball that was close. Jackson is booked for foul Koscielny in the build up. Arsenal attack but overplay the ball and lose possession on the edge of the area where the ball is cleared to Sagna who under no challenge goes down injured and is carried off. (we later find out it was a broken leg and that Sagna will miss the Euro’s)

Arsenal come to life at last and Benayoun-TR7-Ramsey find Gervinho who gets past Walters and lays the ball back to Gibbs who has a poor effort at goal and the ball goes well wide. Should have done much better. Benayoun thinks he has been fouled and when refs does not give free kick has a nibble at the Norwich player which was silly and on another day could have seen red for that.

Norwich break and Coquelin make a blinding tackle on the edge of the area and that was never a penalty in a million years. Arsenal’s turn to break and yet again they overplay on the edge of the area where the ball is cleared up field by Norwich. Now Norwich get corner which is cleared though only to a Norwich player who crosses straight back in and K6 is tugging at Martin’s shirt and that’s a Penalty!!! However, the ref says no. Norwich seriously hard done by there and Arsenal get lucky. Another chanced for Norwich as the ball in crossed in low from the left after some good work and just as Holt looked to make it 3-1 and you would not have been able to argue the score, K6 makes a brilliant tackle to clear the danger. The half ends with RVP  shooting straight at Ruddy and TV5 booked.

HT 1-2

Early chance and RVP drills the ball across the face of goal, Benayoun fails to get on end of cross.. Norwich break and Jackson beats TV5 all ends up but his low shot is straight at S13 and Arsenal breath again, that should have been 3-1. Ramsey is a lucky boy a poor foul on Noughton but the ref looks to have given Ramsey a lifeline with a once more and that’s it, you’re off… Free Kick to Arsenal and Rosicky floats it into the area and there is Benayoun who head straight at Ruddy from six yards out that was a good chance. COYR’s

Now another good chance to Norwich and Noughton has a shot come cross and Jackson just fails to get on the of it and Norwich could have been out of sight by now. Again a good move by  Norwich, Grant Holt  with a lovely chip over  defence, but Jackson shoots wide Norwich are playing very well.

How did they miss?  Benayoun to Van Persie, who shoots right-footed straight at Ruddy . The ball goes out to Gervinho, whose low cross should be smashed in by Ramsey yet he misses the ball completely, shocking and frustrating…  S13’s lazy clearance hits Holt, but he just about gets away with it.

Ramsey off, Oxlade-Chamberlain replaces him. Whatever the score it’s a cracking game and exciting.

Arrrrrrrrgghhhh!!!! Benayoun puts in Van Persie, and with his right foot shoots past the post. Come on Arsenal… Crowd starting to raise their voices… For the first time in the match Arsenal look to be waking up. Back come Arsenal with another attack.  Gervinho’s who has come alive drives into the area and crosses. Double Arrrrrrrrgghhhh!!!! The balls falls nicely for TV5 whose shot that was going in is blocked by Gordon Bennett and the ball falls for TR7 whose shot goes just wide. Pressure now from Arsenal..  Corner…. Another corner…. Both come to nothing

Benayoun goes off Chamakh come on. Gibbs to Gervinho who makes another good run down the left this time beating three players and getting his cross in and finding its way to RVP who lays it back to Chamakh who shoots but his shot is blocked. The ball comes out to Songhino, who floats the ball into the area and Gooooooooooooooal!!! Van Persie is on the end of the floated ball and side foot the ball into the opposite corner 2-2 and that spell of Arsenal pressure pays off… The crowd raise the roof more in relief than anything else.

Penalty Ref!!! Oxo crosses and the ball hits Lappins hand and there is no way that is accidental. Should be penalty. Gervinho is not having a stormer and taking players on and at last beating them. Corner… Cross taken by RVP and Chamakh heads over… No 3 is on the way.

Van Persie and Chamakh exchange passes, allowing the Dutchman to burst into the area before shooting at Ruddy. Norwich have done excellently today, but they’re clinging on currently.

Arsenal break and a superb cross-field ball from Song finds Oxo whose cross just goes over RVP’s head and falls to Gervinho who passes to TR7  who in turn passes to Chamberlain, who tries to lay the ball back to Coquelin it takes a deflection straight to the feet of Van Persie, 10 yards out, who turns and scores.Gooooooooooooooal!!! Arsenal 3-2 Norwich.

Treble Arrrrrrrrgghhhh!!!! Arsenal 3 Norwich 3 Once again Arsenal think they have won the match and go to sleep, Howson plays the ball over Vermaelen, into the path of Morison, whose run has not been tracked by Koscielny. He shoots low, the ball arrowing into the net at the far post. Will Arsenal  ever learn.

Good work from Chamkah-Gervinho-Song-Rosicky whose chipped pass finds Van Persie in the penalty area clean through on goal, but shoots straight at the goalkeeper. Quadruple Arrrrrrrrgghhhh!!!!The ball loops up, and Chamakh heads just wide of an empty net.

Penalty Ref!!! all day, everyday… Chamberlain crosses from the right, Gervinho  totally misses it at the near post and Van Persie is about to make it 4-3 and Noughton pushes him? Now we know why we have not got ONE (yes not ONE) penalty at home in league all season.

Here come Arsenal again with Rosicky who plays the ball to Chamakh who tries to cross and then has another after the first was blocked and there is Songhino with an  improvised back heel shot which hits Ruddy’s standing leg and bounces clear. Bloody hell!!!

Oxo now has a pop from 20 yards out which takes a deflection and goes for a corner, RVP takes and Ruddy drops the ball under pressure from Chamakh. Norwich clear only to K6 who chips the ball through to TV5 who shoots and it flies right across the face of the box. RVP picks it up and floats the ball back into the area and it’s headed clear.Songinho picks up the clearance, lays it back to K6 who crosses to the far post and Gervinho heads it forwards and there is Gibbs, surely 4-3… Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! Bloody Ruddy pulls of a worldy of save to deny Gibbs. That was the last chance and the ref blows his whistle and two major points dropped.

FT 3-3. I can say this watching that match was exciting and well worth the entrance money. Only the result was not right, but if you can’t enjoy that then why bother watching football. I will only worry when there is a time to worry and the Fat Lady has finished singing. RVP scored two more goals that showed why he picked up those awards pre-match.  RVP now has 30 for the season, 4 ahead of Rodney 🙂

Stayed to clap the lads as they did their lap of appreciation to the fans.

Arsenal had their chances and so did Norwich who could have put the game to bed early in the second half. A game the either side could have won but maybe a draw was a fair result in the end and now Arsenal have to rely on Newcastle and Spuds dropping points as third place is no longer in our hands.

For those of you who would like to see Wenger gone… Take a look at this and it should at the very least make you laugh.

It’s now 16.40 on Sunday afternoon and lots of laughs Spuds have gone and drawn at Villa and Man City have beaten the Barcodes 0-2 at the local sports shop, so it’s back in Arsenal’s hands again.

Taking the Son (11)  to his first away match outside London next and what a match to go to know… A match that means something and the excitement of day will be immense.

Have a good rest of Bank holiday weekend Gooners
