A few thoughts on the Queen’s Park Rangers 2-1 Arsenal league match

April 1, 2012

Good morning Gooners from a very, very sunny and very, very blue sky Harlow…

Well that did not go to plan! I had us down for a tidy 2-0 win against relegation fodder QPR..

Seems there really are teams that can have a good set of results(hoodoo) over a club, no matter where they are in the league. QPR always seem to give a game.

Sadly yesterday we did not get the 8th win on the bounce that would have been so welcome, in much the same way that Man City did not get the record for most home wins on the bounce after what it could be said was a shock 3-3 at MiddleEastlands.

So far this weekend with Chelsea also winning and Spurs to come, it’s been a reverse of the few good weekends of the past few weeks. But hey! this is football.

The team Arsene picked yesterday I felt was a good one. One that I thought should see us home with the points, though it was strange that Arsene picked Ramsey to play on the left when he had Gervinho and Oxo on the bench. I did not watch the match as I will not follow streams on the internet. I relied on Sky Soccer Saturday (Stelling, Le-Tissier, Merson, Thompson and Nicholas) and Tweets, from Twitters on Twitter for updates.

The games kicked of and the feedback coming in was Arsenal looked to have started off brightly for all of about 4 mins.  Arsenal had an early corner won by Theo and free kick hit low and weak by RVP that almost sneak through then went into we just need to turn up to win this mode.

QPR then picked themselves up and started to just try to win every ball.  Then the Arsenal of Fulham and Swansea away started to appear.

This was compounded when on 22 mins Taarabt  picked up the ball 30 yards out, turned TV5, ran to the edge of the area and hit a shot just before Kos could get a tackle in past S13 to put QPR 1-0 up and you could not say that QPR did not deserve it. If an Arsenal player had scored that goal we’d all be saying what a cracking goal it was, though how he was allowed the time and space is another question. Taarabt also got booked for celebrating, why does that happen, surely it’s what the game is all about. Talk about taking the fun out of the game. Typical that he should choose today to score his first Premiership goal.

Suddenly twitter came alive and the expletives were all coming out.  You’ve got love social networking…

Arsenal then put some passing together for once and Rosicky-Walcott-Rosicky-RVP got us to the edge of the area, where RVP turned and tried to shoot, but only half hit the ball, which fell kindly for Theo whose first shot hit the right hand upright and came back nicely for Theo to tuck the ball away to make it 1-1. That being Theo’s 10th of the season and what with 13 assists, maybe he is starting to flourish.

Will QPR tire and Arsenal comeback yet again this season?  TV5 picks up a yellow and not having one of his better days. TV5 is followed into Mr. Deans notebook by Songinhio, Mr. Dean gave us all the favours for this season in the match v Spuds.

RVP-Song-Areta and finally Ramsey (who did not have the best of games, But he was playing out of position) shoots and it just goes past the left hand upright.

Lauren Koscielny got through the game without being booked so we cannot know lose him (bar Red Card) for the rest of the season.

Two second half chances are  saved by Kenny from RVP on 58/59 mins.  The latter another superb through ball from Songinhio to RVP who is away one-on-one with on Kenny to beat and he hits his shot well enough which looked to be going into the top right hand corner and Kenny pulls off a great save. He doesn’t always score when he wants.

QPR now on the attack and the ball is chipped to Mackie who mis-controls the ball, however, TV5 slips and lets Mackie in. Mackie does well, looks up and there is Samba Diakité to smash a side footer into the net past the hapless S13 for 2-1 QPR.

Now even Joey Barton is playing chipped passes and puts Mackie in, who controls, passes back to Barton who fires his shot just over the bar. Close to 3-1 there.

Games ends.  2-1 to QPR and you can’t argue they deserved it. They played like they wanted it and played to pre-match Barton tactics where he said they need to step up, fight to avoid relegation.

  • Why did we lose to lowly QPR?
  • Why were they better than us on day?
  • Why did we not play?
  • Were we just to cocky and expecting to just turn up to win?
  • Why play Ramsey on the wing?
  • What a time for TV5 to have a stinker.
  • Why did Arsene wait for ages before changing it?
  • Who put the bomp in the bomp-a-bomp-a-bomp? Who put the ram in the ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong?

all fair questions.

Arsene Wenger said

“We made defensive mistakes and our  performance was not good enough to win this kind of game.”It was frustrating because they left us the ball and waited for our mistakes — and we made mistakes. Complacency? It is difficult to say but why not?”

Still for me we had a good run of seven wins, that has taken us to 3rd in what is without doubt a topsy-turvy season for Arsenal. seven games left and it looks to be gearing up for a right old ding-dong finish for 3rd/4th place between Arsenal/Spuds/Chelsea… I would think top for is more in our favour due to Chelsea’s Champions league matches and Spurs playing Chelsea in the FA Cup Semi. But take nothing for granted.

It’s a dogfight and yet at least it makes the rest of the season interesting.

Today was the first time since I started this blog that I have had to report on an Arsenal Premiership defeat.

Finally to any Arsenal fan that thinks they should be refunded for Arsenal’s performance yesterday… Please just go and watch another sport…
