Arsenal News 20 February 2012

February 20, 2012

Morning All. Lovely sunny day here in Cheapside, London. Back at work after long weekend.

Already had a couple of mentions about Arsenal’s poor weekend, but a quick “we we’re rubbish” combined with the old Cockney stare and it quickly dies a death.

So here we are 4th in the table and just knocked out of the FA Cup. Arsene once again asking for everybody to stick together and that 4th place is a trophy. While I would not argue that 4th place is a trophy in the sense of the word “MONEY” where the large sums are generated by participating in the Champions league is concerned, I do wonder about the club’s ambition is if this is all they seem to be looking at.

Top four IS NOT a trophy. It’s the minimum a club like Arsenal with high ticket prices and in the top five richest clubs in world football should expect.  In years to come when my Son (aged 10 is 55 like me) he will not want to see in the trophies won section top four and Champions League qualifiers every season and no trophies.

A trophy is a big silver thing that players strive for, hope for, so they have something to tell their kids and something to show for a career in football. It’s not about a cheque handed over by UEFA. I can see what Arsene is saying, but maybe he should try saying it another way.  My Son wants to see his heroes walking the stairs and the Captain picking up a trophy and holding it aloft for the hordes of Gooners in the stadium to cheer. This is surely what the end product is all about.

This morning the Sun is carrying the story that Ivan Gazidis has said Arsene Wenger’s job is safe. Gazidis is quoted as saying

“People are always asking the same question but the first trophy is to finish in the top four and that’s still possible for us. “I believe that is vital for us, so let’s focus on that.”

Though there are no quotes as to him saying Arsene’s job is safe. George Graham in the same papers Blasts Wenger for buying flops, Insists the board have doubts about the French boss and declared that star striker Robin van Persie will leave and Gunners should get rid of Theo Walcott as the England winger has not fulfilled his potential.

The Telegraph back page leads with Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke will jet in to London to declare belief in manager Arsene Wenger. Good article.

Arsenal shareholders to meet and discuss Arsene Wenger’s performance at the end of the season – This being a survey to be polled at the end of the season. AST shareholders? Fan share and a few shares maybe.

Fans Survey page on AST and also the AST survey 2011 reportitself. It would seem that the Questionnaires were sent to 850 members of the AST and 382 responses were received (350 received in 2010), representing 45 percent of the membership.

Daily mail Sports page leads with Struggling Arsenal to give Wenger £55m for summer spending spree. The cynics may be looking at Season Ticket renewals being sent out shortly and business as usual until Season ticket have been purchased. I have to say £55m will not go very far in today’s if like Arsenal are fond of saying transfer funds have to also take into account players salaries.

I also see that Per Mertersaker is no out for the season, added to Jack Wilshere. Koscielny is hopefully due back for Spurs match. What’s happened to Abu Diaby? You don’t even hear updates about him anymore.  Just when you though it was safe to go back in the water, the injury curse strikes again at Arsenal.

Anyway work to do, so laters

Stay safe out there.
