A few thoughts on the Sunderland 2-0 Arsenal match – FA Cup 5th Round

February 18, 2012

Time for Sky Sports Soccer Saturday. Geoff Stelling is today joined by Paul Merson, Matt le Tissier, Phil Thompson and Charlie “Gooner” Nicholas.

Paul Merson

  • “Milan was one of the worse performances I have seen from Arsenal”.
  • “Cringeworthy”
  • “Men against boys”
  • “Theo Walcott’s performance was one of the worse I have seen from an Arsenal footballer (it was shocking, says I).
  • “Arsenal’s passing is taking them nowhere in matches. Arsenal pass and pass and end up losing the ball” prediction draw

Charlie Nicholas – I love the way he talks about Arsenal as “we”.

  • “Arsenal are not good enough”
  • “The standards have dramatically dropped”

The Chief Executives have no passion for the club” prediction draw

Phil Thompson

  • “Arsenal have slipped so far”
  • “Arsene is too stubborn” prediction draw

Matt Le-Tissier

  • “Surprised if RVP plays for Arsenal next season”
  • “Arsene Wenger thinks the system he plays Arsenal can win can things with no matter who plays in the team” prediction Sunderland win

Talk of absent owner in Stan Kroneke not being a David Dein and having no interest in the club or team.

Channel hop over to ESPN and Chelsea v Birmingham match. straight away…..

20 mins and Birmingham 0-1 Murphy at the far stick. you cross em and I’ll stick em in…  “Sacked in the morning, you’re getting sacked in the morning……………” comes the chant from the Birmingham fans.

22 mins and Ramiries is brought down. Chelsea PENALTY!!!. (What’s the) Mata takes and would you Adam & Eve it, Doyle saves onto the post and it stays 0-1 to Brum…Torres thinks he is Chamakh.

HT Chelsea 0-1 Birmingham – Chelsea leave the pitch to sound of boo’s ringing from the terraces.

60 mins 1-1 Chelsea back level. Sturridge heads in from very good cross from Ivanovic after good work from (I don’t mind, you don’t) Mata. Relief maybe on the Chelsea terraces.

FT at the Bridge of sighs 1-1 and Chelsea have a replay which cannot be bad for Arsenal’s chances of top 4 spot :-).

K/0 time for the three 3pm matches.

  • 1 min 1-0  Everton. Drenthe
  • 4 mins 0-1 Bolton. Miyachi Take a boo Son
  • 5 mins 0-1 Leicester. St. Ledger
  • 6 mins 2-0  Everton. Stracqualursi (whooooooooooooo!!!)
  • 23 mins 1-1 Norwich. Hoolahan brings Norwich back into game
  • 59 mins 0-2 Bolton. Ngog
  • 71 mins 1-2 Leicester. Nugent
  • 90 mins Phillip misses penalty for Blackpool

FT Millwall 0-2 Bolton

FT Everton 2-0 Bolton

FT Norwich 1-2  Leicester

Well that was exciting, NOT!!! Time for quick cuppa and then “The Arsenal” C.O.Y.R’s…

Team is in………………. Fabianski, Sagna, Djourou, Vermaelen, Coquelin, Arteta, Song, Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gervinho, Van Persie Subs : Szczesny, Rosicky, Walcott, Squillaci, Arshavin, Chamakh, Benayoun.

Lots of empty seats. The ITV effect.

  • 5 Arsenal in total possession. Arteta with a free kick juts wide Ooooooooooooo!!!!
  • 7 and Pitch takes this weeks first victim as Coquelin pulls hamstring.
  • 8 Shout from the home crowd for Penalty. You’re having a larf.
  • 10 on comes Squillaci and 3 mins later down goes Ramsey. You can here the glee in Andy Townsend’s voice.
  • 24 nice pass from RVP into Gervinho’s path who shoots and Mignolet saves.
  • 34 and RVP is brought down in the box. No Penalty says Webb.
  • 35 this pitch is awful
  • 39 once again, a screamer from Richardson and BANG 1-0 Sunderland. Goes in off Squillaci who has got to be seriously unlucky.

HT1-0 Sunderland… A first half of possession from Arsenal, pressure from Sunderland and typically down to a freak goal, the sort of thing that happens to Arsenal lately. Pass, pass, pass, go nowhere, One shot by Gervinho. Arsenal just have no goal threat unless RVP gets into position to score.  Why does Wenger rest Gibbs? Within a minute Coquelin is off and that means TV5 goes to left back and a centre half pairing of Squillaci and Djourou. It’s madness. Teams see this and play accordingly and know how to handle

  • 46 Sagna booked.
  • 48 Djourou two footed tackle and lucky not to see red.
  • 53 Squllachi and Ramsey off and Rocicky and Theo Walcott on
  • 57 yellow for Vermaelen
  • 62 yet another nailed on Pen turned down By Webb. (two nailed on for me)
  • 77 Sunderland break after Chamberlain loses the ball.  Chamberlain gets back only to turn the ball into his own net 2-0 Sunderland.

Seeing Arsene Wenger on the touch-line is sad. However, he has brought this on himself. Another shocking, toothless display.

  • 83 Oh look there is Theo Walcott, when did he sneak on.
  • 85 good run by Rosicky and slides ball into RVP and ball goes over. Sums it all up today.
  • 87 Good saving tackle from Sagna to stop Sunderland getting a 3rd.
  • 89 Corner, short pass to Arteta who returns it to Song straight out for throw in, The team have collapsed totally.
  • 90 and Arteta fires over.

FT Sunderland 2-0 Arsenal. Sunderland fully deserve victory. 100% passion and effort from their team and 10% passion and effort from Arsenal.

What I watched tonight on top of the Milan game was not any Arsenal team I have seen for many years. No fight. No punch up front. Poor in defence. Lacking in midfield (though I’ll spare Alex Song) The manager looks to have lost the plot.

What happens next? Should Arsene resign? The team do not look like they are interested. The club seriously needs a lift and it’s not coming in its current form. I think tonight the fans have had enough. I have.

There comes a time when you can see nothing is going to improve as it stands, you have to see the light.  For me the best thing that can happen is (yet I doubt it will) is for Arsene to fall on his sword. I would normally always say give him time to at least keep us in top 4 by end of season, but can I see this happening. No! I will always have great respect for Arsene Wenger a brilliant man and has been a great manager for Arsenal. I would never rubbish him.

I am fed up with players telling us what they are gonna do. I really thought that after Milan the players would show huge pride, even if just in themselves, but they showed nothing.

All good things come to an end.

For me a good thing ended tonight. If Arsene does not leave then of course for the rest of the season support the team 100%.

Finally a big shout out to those Gooners who travelled to Milan and Sunderland only to be served up the rubbish that was on offer, I salute you!!!

Stay safe out there.

Hi Geoff. Little bit down but really only because I like Wenger and hate to see what is happening to the guy. I try to be honest for people and to myself. What I can see is a decline that looks to me that the players have lost faith in Wenger. I also look and feel Wenger has brought a lot of this on himself. Of course there are lots of un-answered questions about money to spend and shoulod he or shouldn’t he and did he or did he not have the money.

Injuries have also played a huge part and maybe Wenger has just become an unlucky manager and cannot break the cycle.. I am still 100% behind the team till end of season and hope they can find some spirit from somewhere to come back and finish top four.

It may be though that a fresh outlook needs to be put in place. While I am being honest I cannot see Arsenal and Wenger parting company just yet, however, a defeat to Spurs might be more than anyone can handle.

For me it is still “All about the Arsenal”
