Welcome… Who am I?

January 29, 2012

I’m a Gooner!!! I support “The Arsenal” I don’t support Arsene Wenger, yet I respect him, like him and back him. I will back every manager, including the next one after Arsene leaves, as he will one day. I don’t Support the players individually, I support them collectively. When my first hero Liam Brady left the club in 1980 I realised player come, players go. If they leave, good luck to them. I won’t hate them, just ships that pass in the night. Arsenal is the Port they all sail into and one day leave but will always be there.

Born August 1957 into a mad Arsenal supporting family… My Dad (who sadly passed away in 1995) supported Arsenal since a lad in Islington and told me many memories of his time supporting Arsenal from a boy, including attending the 1930 FA Cup Final when a Zeppelin hovered over the stadium well as many other AFC memories.

ZepplinYes my Dad was in that crowd

I have two elder brothers aged 62 and 66.  When I was a mere nipper Dad took me and  brothers to see Arsenal over Highbury and  also away matches. My brother Pat later got a Red & White Austin Humber that we went to many away games in.

You can see most of my history on Arsenal via this link at the Arsenal collective titled My 50 years as a Gooner a blog I wrote for the site.

I have now been a season ticket holder since 1988, before that there was no need as you only need pay at the turnstile.

When I started going on my own with mates I stood in the Schoolboys section at Highbury. I then moved onto the North Bank, then Clock End. I got my first Season Ticket in the Upper East Stand at Highbury. When the new North Stand was finished in 1993 I purchased a bond and sat in upper tier of the Stand. I am currently sitting in Upper Tier Clock End of the Emirates Stadium.

I have travelled to around seventy grounds all over England to see Arsenal play, Those I have not visited Arsenal have not played at, due to Arsenal being in the TOP division all my Arsenal supporting life. Overall I reckon I’ve seen at least 1500 odd Arsenal matches in all competitions inc friendlies. I see myself as a positive supporter of the Arsenal and just about having seen it all, bar winning Champions League, though we came close in 2006. I was there. I don’t get bothered by a few losses or a few years without trophies.

This does not mean I cannot see problems when they arise at the club in whatever shape or form they take. I just like to see the perspective in football.

My views on Arsenal/football are my own and nobody has to agree with them but I will always listen to any views other may have. Should anyone like to comment on my blogs please feel free. Also you might like to follow me and my views on Twitter @harlowgooner if you like what you read. I like to have a laugh about the game as well.

In 2009 I was diagnosed with Cancer (mouth) and after treatment I came out the other side looking to be more positive and enjoy life the best I can.  Today I try to enjoy everyday by taking the best medicine there is, which is as much laughter as I can get out of day. It also helps when “The Arsenal” win.

I have a Son, Luke, aged 13 who has a season ticket and I take to the Emirates. Luke is mad about the Arsenal. I have taken him to quite a few away games so far  and the only match he has seen Arsenal lose was at Norwich 1-0. Luke has see Arsenal draw at Leyton Orient and win at Villa, Brighton (2) WBA. Crystal Palace, Fulham (2) and Cardiff.

Cheers

Steve @harlowgooner Martin
